About

The mezzo-soprano Maria Rüssel comes from Hannover, Germany. She has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Eduard-von-Winterstein-Theater in Annaberg-Buchholz since the 2022/23 season, where she has already made her debut in several roles. These include Hänsel in “Hänsel und Gretel”, Prince Orlofsky in “Die Fledermaus” and Diane in Hugo Hirsch’s operetta “Der Fürst von Pappenheim”, which won the BR-Klassik-Frosch award in December 2023. She gained experience during her time as a student at the Theater Osnabrück in the leading role of Jacob in the children’s opera “Gold!” and in Bertolt Brecht’s “Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui” at the Schauspielhaus Hannover. As part of her master’s programme at the Universität der Künste Berlin, she took on the role of Cherubino in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro”, among others.

Maria Rüssel received her first singing lessons in the Mädchenchor Hannover with the choir director at that time, Prof. Gudrun Schröfel. In this context, she already gained experience as a soloist in the role of the 3rd boy in “Die Zauberflöte” at the Staatsoper Hannover as well as in various radio and CD recordings. Maria Rüssel began her vocal studies with Prof. Sabine Ritterbusch at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, which she continued in Berlin with Prof. Carola Höhn. An Erasmus+ semester at the Mozarteum Salzburg enriched her education. She was a scholarship holder of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Hannover e.V. Foundation. In addition to her focus on the opera repertoire, Maria Rüssel is also in demand as an oratorio and concert singer and is active in professional ensembles such as the Balthasar-Neumann-Chor.

“[…] while the sweetness in Maria Rüssel’s voice is simply beguiling.”

about "Satanella", Der Opernfreund

“Standing out from the ensemble […] was Maria Rüssel as the beautifully luminous Letty […]”

about "Hopfen und Malz", concerti

“Musically, too, the evening gives the best testimony to those involved. Bettina Grothkopf, Maria Rüssel and Laszlo Varga have a broad palette of tonal colours and, above all, always find expressive, simple tones.”

about "Das blaue Klavier", Das Orchester

“Christian von Götz […] disguises Fenton and his adored Annetta Page as Harlequin and
Colombina and lets them in a duet – touchingly sung together with Maria Rüssel – float through the dreamland of the
Airs.”

about "Falstaff", onlinemerker

Maria Rüssel is Polynesia, Dolittle’s faithful companion and leads her parrot puppet with so much charm and humour that it is hard to believe that the mezzo-soprano is actually at home in major classical roles and not in puppetry.”
